One of his first novels, THE RIVER’S KISS, sold over 30.000 copies and was curated by one of Brazil’s most famous book clubs, Tag. Volp also launched the “Clube da Caixa Preta”, a project that showcases short stories by black authors that never made it to Brazil. No matter the project, Volp always aims to use writing as a power of social transformation, so that marginalized groups feel included beyond stereotypes.

justify;">A jaguar kills a man in the middle of the forest by the Brazilian Atlantic coast, in the heart of the nature reserve Arraial do Sana. Three siblings, Alan, Alex and Betina reunite to organize the funeral of their father, Zé Maria, after his tragic death. Alex, the eldest, arrives by car with Emma, his French wife. He has apparently made something of himself. Alberto, the middle sibling, arrives in women’s clothing and now goes by the name of Betina. The story is told by Alan, the youngest, who claims to be studying medicine in Rio. Actually, he has turned to literature and wants to become an author. In his narrative, he alternately addresses the mother and the siblings.

The recently deceased father was obviously not a saint in his own home, as the title suggests. On the contrary, he was only perceived as a saint outside his own family, in the little town where he lives, was liked by many and, thanks to his knowledge of the forest plants, a respected healer. For his wife Rute, on whom he continuously inflicted violence, and his three children, he was the devil. While the town holds a procession to bid farewell to a beloved resident, Rute and her children go through the complexities of mourning between longing and the marks of oppression.

Home Saint (“Santo de casa”) touches on deep wounds and exemplifies how much the patriarchal system precariously affects the subjectivity of men themselves.

»The book was born from listening to the stories that surrounded me in the cities of Baixada Fluminense, where I grew up. Stories lived between four walls in homes that fought to survive against femicide, the horrors of machismo and the violence of patriarchy.«
Stefano Volp

»Home Saint explores the labyrinth of hatred within a family and its impact on each member’s psyche. This short novel reminds us that every living person carries their dead with them and that, sooner or later, they will need to be laid to rest.«
Itamar Vieira Junior

»A striking and powerful work. To construct a narrative that reveals the complexity of domestic violence in its many forms, Volp explores the visible and invisible pain inflicted by patriarchy, experienced by people of all genders, whilst also drawing on personal experiences from his childhood.«
IstoÉ

»In this beautiful book, the critical look at the abusive male also carries love in the green of well-tended plants and in the flavour of couscous. Without villains or flourishes, such is life when we have the courage to see it.«
Bianca Santana

»In the classic “Anna Karenina”, Tolstoy writes that “all happy families are alike, each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way”, but Stefano Volp’s “Santo de Casa” challenges this maxim. The book shows that happiness and pain can coexist. As the author says, “what is unhappiness for some is happiness for others”.«
Folha de S.Paulo

»The sudden death of a patriarch, devoured by a jaguar, makes his entire family question their sense of mourning. The tragic nature of Zé Maria’s death symbolises all the violence that surrounds him: an abused man and an abusive father and husband. In a kind of autofiction, Stefano Volp scrutinises grief after the loss of an individual who left behind, for the most part, marks of pain. The story shows the impact of gender, race and class pressures within a family.«
Quatro cinco um

»This is the thing: a house, seen from the outside, is just a house, but its walls hold intimate secrets that are too difficult to reveal. Not in this case, as Volp puts his finger firmly in the wound.«
Mídia Ninja

»To construct a narrative that shows the complexity of family violence in multiple forms, Volp investigated the palpable and intangible pain caused by patriarchy, experienced by people of all genders, as well as drawing on personal experiences from his own childhood.«
lang="EN-GB"> (“Nosso musseque”) is a captivating tale of growing up in one of the vibrant shanty towns, the musseques, of Luanda during the 1940s and 1950s. Weaving back and forwards through his half-remembered childhood, the narrator draws us into a close-knit world of labourers, shopkeepers, drunks, prostitutes and determined women battling to bring up their families, as Angola hurtles towards the beginning of its armed struggle against Portuguese colonial rule. Meanwhile the children laugh, play, squabble and fight, puzzle at racial taunts and move rapidly through adolescence towards sexual awakening and a greater awareness of political realities around them. José Luandino Vieira gives each their own voice. Nosso musseque is an impressive and beautifully rendered portrait of a society on its way toward a self-determined future.

»Surprising, delightful and profoundly moving. By the end of the book, we are nostalgic for a place we have never been.«

»Set in a shanty suburb of Angola’s capital Luanda, in the 1940s and 50s, Our Musseque twists through a lively cast, among them a cobbler, prostitute, sailor, grocer, policeman, baker, rent collector and various children. This cannot have been an easy book to translate, but Robin Patterson’s work is impressive.«
The Times Literary Supplement

»Told through the eyes of boy coming of age, graduating from playing with friends to falling in love, Our Musseque is a collection of tales which build into a novel detailing not just the boy’s transition but the erosion of the musseque as the bulldozers move in to build homes for the more affluent. The stories reflect the boyhood of the author, a Portuguese immigrant brought up in a musseque who became politically active and whose trial in 1959 helped spark the Angolan uprising against colonial rule.«
Tribune

»The shanty towns in Luanda, the capital of Angola, in the 1940s and 1950s, are vividly depicted in this idiosyncratic novel published more than 40 years after the author wrote it, in prison. Prostitutes, shopkeepers, children and drunks jostle and collide, giving conflicting accounts of their experiences as the civil war approaches, a conflict that will change their lives for good. Funny, shocking and moving, it makes you nostalgic for a place you have never been.«
A broken hand mirror. A spidery strip of false eyelash. These are the fragments left to Irene Vilar, granddaughter of Lolita Lebron, the revered political activist for Puerto Rican independence who in 1954 sprayed the U.S. House of Representatives with gunfire, wounding several congressmen, and later served twenty-seven years in prison. In The Ladies’ Gallery, Vilar revisits the legacy of her grandmother and that of her anguished mother, who leapt to her death from a speeding car when Vilar was eight.

Eleven years after her mother’s death, Vilar awakens in a psychiatric hospital after her own suicide attempt at the age of eighteen and begins to face the devastating inheritance of abandonment and suicide passed down from her grandmother and mother. The familial pattern of self-destruction flung open the doors to her national inheritance and the search for identity. Alternating between Vilar’s notes from the ward and the unraveling of her family’s secrets, this lyrical and powerful memoir of three generations of Puerto Rican women is urgent, impassioned, and unforgettable.

The Ladies’ Gallery was a Philadelphia Inquirer and Detroit Free Press notable book of the year and was short-listed for the 1999 Mind Book of the Year Award. The memoir was featured on NPR’s Fresh Air, Univison, CBS, PBS La Plaza, Vogue magazine, New York Times Magazine, and in the Arts’ front page section of The New York Times.

Vilar was just a teenager, a pliant young college undergraduate in thrall to a fifty-year-old professor, when they embarked on a relationship that led to marriage and multiple abortions. Vilar knows that she is destined to be misunderstood, that many will see her nightmare as a story of abusing a right, of using abortion as a means of birth control. But it isn’t that. Her nightmare is part of an awful secret, and the real story is shrouded in shame, colonialism, self-mutilation, and a family legacy that features a heroic grandmother, a suicidal mother, and two heroin-addicted brothers. Hers is a story that touches on American exploitation and reproductive repression in Puerto Rico. It is a story that looks back on her traumatic childhood growing up in the shadow of her mother’s death and the footsteps of her famed grandmother, the political activist Lolita Lebrón, who was imprisoned for twenty five years for her attack on the US Congress in 1954.

Impossible Motherhood is a heartrending and ultimately triumphant testimonial of shame and servility. Abortion has never offered any honest person easy answers. Vilar’s dark journey through self-inflicted wounds, compulsive patterns, and historical hauntings revisits the difficulties many have with the subject and prompts an important, much-needed discussion – literary, political, social, and philosophical. Vilar’s is a powerful story of loss and mourning that bravely delves into selfhood, national identity, family responsibility, and finally motherhood itself.

Robin Morgan, in her foreword to Impossible Motherhood:
“Irene Vilar reclaimed her life when she finally brought to term and birthed the woman she is today, after so many decades of a tragedy infinitely worse than all her pregnancy terminations: the aborted self. Those who think the struggle for women’s freedom and power no longer necessary or single-issue simplistic would do well to read this book. We dare not forget that a woman’s right to control her own body includes not just the right to control her womb but also her voice. Irene Vilar has courageously let that voice sing. Listen to it.”

»Irene Vilar’s dramatic and beautifully drawn story forces the reader to confront the power of sexuality and procreation that often is the only power a young woman perceives she owns in this world. Impossible Motherhood is profound, raw, wrenching, and honest to the bone.
»I have never read a book like Impossible Motherhood, Irene Vilar’s disturbing, heart-wrenching, and ultimately triumphant memoir, for the simple and understandable reason that no one of her gender has ever summoned the brutally raw, transcendent courage to write such a book—and yes, confess to such a troubling story.«

»Impossible Motherhood is another dark perfect gem from Irene Vilar and a journey into a harrowing underworld but guided by Vilar’s gifts and her light we emerge in the end transformed, enlightened and oh so alive. ”«
