This is the first time the prize has been awarded to a novelist. Lídia Jorge is the seventh woman to receive the Pessoa Prize in its 39 editions and the first woman to be honored in the last five years. Among the former winners are José Cardoso Pires (1997), Manuel Alegre (1999), Mário Cláudio (2004), Eduardo Lorenço (2011), Richard Zenith (2012) and João Luís Barreto Guimarães (2022).
The Pessoa Prize was created in 1987 by the Expresso newspaper and the IT company Unisys and is awarded annually to a Portuguese person who has stood out in the artistic, cultural, or scientific life of the country. Its purpose is to recognize outstanding contributions to Portuguese culture and society.
