Luís Cardoso wins the Oceanos Prize 2021 with his novel The Pumpkin Planter. This is the first time that a book from the Asian continent is among the finalists and winners.
The jury highlighted the dexterity and narrative resourcefulness of the author in the construction of history crossed by the violence that marked the colonial past of East Timor.
The third place goes to Gonçalo M. Tavares with his novel The Middle Bone. Tavares has already won the prize twice in the past, in 2007 with Jerusalém and in 2011 with A Voyage to India.
The total value of the award is 250.000,00 Reais; 120.000,00 for the first place, 80.000,00 for the second and 50.000,00 for the third.
