To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Vatican Museums’ collection of contemporary religious art, Pope Francis will welcome nearly 200 artists including writers, painters, sculptors, filmmakers, photographers, designers, and publishers from 33 different countries to the Sistine Chapel on 23 June 2023. Among the seven Portuguese artists are Gonçalo M. Tavares and José Luis Peixoto.
“The Pope’s wish is to celebrate the work and lives of artists, highlighting their contribution to building a sense of shared humanity and promoting common values,” explains the note from the Dicastery for Culture and Education.
The Holy See states that this initiative reinforces its intention to assume its role as “promoter of the relations between the Holy See and the world of Culture, encouraging dialogue as an indispensable tool for a true encounter, reciprocal interaction and enrichment.
